To “Press Play” Or Not To

by User ImageRoberta on October 17th, 2006

Today, Diddy released his new album, “Press Play”. MTV News quotes Diddy as saying:

“After you press play, it’s gonna make or break you in this game. That’s where I’m at. We about to press play on October 3, and hopefully I can make people feel good.”

The Washington Post was totally on the money with their piece, appropriately titled, “With Diddy’s Taste, Who Needs Talent?”

What has Diddy really done for the musical community besides bring talent together to record new compilations? Nada. Oh yeah, he talks on the tracks, saying, “Yeah, yeah” or “Yeah baby” or “I’m back”. I’m amazed at the talent that is oozing into my eardrums (enter sarcasm here). He may have great taste and wear expensive clothes, etc, etc, but what has Diddy done for you lately?

    One hit reviews:
  • Washington Post: Of course, when these hits fade, you’ll forget this album. Diddy is temporal, not timeless.
  • USA Today: Ultimately, though, Diddy’s personality, or lack of it, pervades the album
  • Pitchfork Media: Diddy can be anyone he wants to be, no matter the price or voice. He’s malleable, disposable– the new new old shit.
  • So there you have it…..and I’m sure there are people that think Diddy is the best thing since sliced bread, I just don’t happen to be one of them.
