The Top Ten Bands You Should Discover Today

By ROBERTA — Oct 12th, 2007

1. Shiny Toy Guns

Shiny Toy Guns’ is comprised of Jeremy Dawson, Chad Petree, Carah Faye, and Mikey Martin. They say that their music is the sum of three parts, guitars, technology, and melody. It’s the perfect mix of synth meets high-powered vocals. Listen to “You are the one” and you’ll see what I mean.

Genre: Electronica/Rock
Standout “Listen-to” Track: You Are The One

2. Dimmu Borgir

The best thing that has ever come out of Norway. I give you, Dimmu Borgir. These guys need no introduction. If you haven’t heard anything from them yet, then there’s no better time than the present.

Genre: Metal
Standout “Listen-to” Track: The Sacrilegious Scorn

3. The 69 Eyes

With the deep vocals of this band, you can’t pass up tracks like “Gothic Girl” or “Angels”. This is the best gothic rock mix that you’ll find. They are currently touring and getting coverage on MTV. Don’t let that lead you astray, though. This band has the staying power and will keep on rockin’ as long as fans like us are around.

Genre: Gothic Rock
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Gothic Girl

4. Eighteen Visions

This is hard rock music at it’s best. This particular band has that special get up and go that a lot of hard rock bands could only strive for. Listen to this fast-paced musical genius and you’ll find yourself hooked.

Genre: Hard Rock
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Victim

5. Charlie Drown

I don’t think I could say enough good things about this female fronted metal band. Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing the one and only Charlie. She was a delight, indeed. This rock and metal mix has the right combination of good grooves, metal, and attitude. Perfect for driving.

Genre: Hard Rock/Metal
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Painkiller Lullaby

6. Man Raze

Born from Def Leppard, The Sex Pistols, and Girl, are Man Raze. “Turn it up” is a song that I can clean house to or just go driving to. Phil Collen of Def Leppard gives the guitars a real working over. Simon Laffy and Paul Cook round off the sound for the music that is essential for your collection. Plus, Girl was awesome in it’s own right. As was The Sex Pistols. Nevermind the bollocks….ehh, you get the idea.

Genre: Rock and Roll
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Turn it up

7. Midnight Syndicate

It’s that time of the year again, folks. You guessed it, it’s that scary Halloween time….and what music is better to put the haunted in the house? Midnight Syndicate will fill that void for you. They make scary piano sounds and music that’s fit for your funeral.

Genre: Halloween Music
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Family Secrets

8. Black Tide

Black Tide are still rather new, but I couldn’t get over how much they resembled early Motley Crue. Not in the way they look, but in the electricity that they portray in their music. Don’t believe me? Check ‘em out for yourself.

Genre: Rock
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Shockwave

9. Common
This is the perfect mellow hip hop/rap mix of sweet light beats and cool vocals. It’s not gangster rap, and it totally reminds me of Lenny Kravitz.

Genre: Hip Hop/Rap
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Drivin’ Me Wild

10. Emilie Autumn

I love the gothic sound and the toy pianos of Emilie Autumn. This is music that has a whole lot of heart and you can just tell by listening to it that a lot of talent has gone into the production and sound. Again, here’s another artist that I can’t say enough good things about. Check out her screaming in “Opheliac”, it rocks!

Genre: Electronic Violin/Gothic/I don’t know :)
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Opheliac

  4. This is the third list I’ve visited which makes 30 bands I’ve never heard of. I can’t believe you all found so many unknown bands (to me anyhow). That last album cover is so cool. It makes you want to listen to it. Lets hope the New York list has something I recognize.

Now I’ve off to check out some of their MySpace pages and see who I like and who I don’t. :)
