If you weren’t a fan of Katy Perry’s latest song, California Gurls (or it’s spelling), then you are not alone. She branded the song as her answer to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ NYC tribute, Empire State of Mind. But is it really a good answer? Sure, the song has Snoop Dogg on it, but he really makes the song, not her.
So, instead of blaring that from your iPod, we’ve got a list of seven California songs that would be much better suited to your eardrums. Enjoy.
Tupac – California Love
There is just no comparison. Katy Perry vs. the late Tupac Shakur? It’s no contest. I still hear this song playing in clubs.
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Dani California
This song is about an ex-girlfriend of Anthony Kiedis named Danielle. They had a sort of Bonnie and Clyde type of relationship where they would do drugs and robberies. Danielle is said to have died in California before she could make it to Minnesota, which would have been their biggest heist. He dubbed her Dani California. That premise is way cooler than Katy could ever aspire to be.
Led Zeppelin – Going To California
Progressive rock? Folk rock? Who cares, it’s Led Zeppelin.
Notorious B.I.G. – Goin Back To Cali
He’s dead and he’s still more awesome than she’ll ever be. Agreed? I thought so.
David Lee Roth – California Girls
It’s obviously where Katy got the inspiration from for her new song. It’s just a shame that she crapped all over the original title by hosing up the spelling.
Paper Tongues – Ride To California
I’d barely even heard of Paper Tongues and they still made a song that I’d rather hear as opposed to Katy Perry. That speaks volumes.
The Mamas & The Papas – California Dreamin’
Yes, I crept back in the vault, all of the way back to 1965 for this treasure. This song made Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Can your Katy Perry do that?
