Conan O’Brien gives severance pay to for ousted staffers

by on February 02, 2010 | 13 Comments

Conan O’Brien is a stand-up guy, especially when it comes to his ousted “Tonight Show” crew. Apparently, NBC did not cut them in on the receiving end of cash when it came to the negotiations.

Conan has taken the helm at shelling out the dough to the parties who got screwed in the deal. A source close to production said that “The Tonight Show” stagehands were not covered in the severance plan.

The talk show host has agreed to pay his nearly 50 person crew at least six weeks of severance.

Way to go CoCo! Staying classy even after the fact.

  • jamie

That is the kind of boss that will inspire loyalty from the workers. This guy is one of a kind.

Raven haired?! Doesn't raven mean black hair? He has red hair.

Besides the point, yes, Conan is awesome and a stand up guy and NBC doesn't deserve him

OMG…. get a grip. The man got 45 MILLION DOLLARS. Face it, the show sucked. CRY BABY CONAN.

I bet there are a lot of people who wish they could just pay bills, buy food, gas, etc. NO SYMPATHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • ballplayer 25

you are correct he did get 45 million…he could have done the whole "sucks to be you" thing like alot of Hollywood types or rich execs. do but he didn't ,he knows that his show would not have worked without the staff. He took care of them as he thought best suited the situation. You need to look at the positive instead of being cynical. That is a societal issue in our country we tend to be negative and we need to appreciate gestures no matter how slight or trivial. If you were the staff member or one of your family members were on his staff I think you would view this differently….think about it…have a nice day

  • SoulAdored65

Conan wanted NO SYMPATHY from anyone about his dilemma. He said he felt lucky to have what he did. And that he took care of his staff just goes to show you what a decent human being he is. Conando, can't wait till you are back on the air. With Andy, of course!

What was NBC thinking when they hired him years ago? He isn't funny at all! Whats up with the stupid looking hair anyway?
He shouldn't be paid $ at all in my view!

    • Andrea

You did not just say that!!! Conan is fucking hilarious!!! And he's classy too. Take that!

    • jill schultz

Sorry but when you only give 6 weeks severance package to 50 employees, thats what? probably less than a million …. Where is the rest of the money? he could have easly shared his severance with them ( or at least spend half or 1/3 rd. i mean, this people stayed with him for over 17 years, on top of that, they just moved to LA from NYC didnt they? ( please correct me if im wrong ).

Conan is super cool but i dont know, 6 weeks is a bit too little.

  • A Jay Leno Lover

You folks need to get your facts straight. He got 45 million…..12 of which was reportedly for his staff's severance pay. He had a staff of almost 200 people. You have to be kidding if you think a show like Conan's can be run by a staff of 50. (Jay Leno has a staff of 175…as stated by Jay Leno) This was all reported in the news and some of it stated by Conan on his show. It all happened because his ratings dropped 49% from when he took over the show. NO ONE keeps a show when ratings go that low. TV is ALLLLL about ratings and selling advertisement. Conan was in THIRD place in the late night show competition. He needed to go…..being a nice guy has nothing to do with any of it. His staff has been well compensated and Conan will move on to another network and be just fine. Letterman survived leaving NBC and so will Conan.

  • RealAmericanWoman

Um, Conan worked hard to get where he is. If you did something unique that made millions of people happy, maybe you'd stop being so bitter and resenting people who are more successful than yourself.
