Gorillaz accused of stealing Stylo from Eddy Grant’s Time Warp

According to Contact Music, Gorillaz have been accused of stealing their new song, Stylo from Eddy Grant’s song, Time Warp.

Eddy said, “I am outraged that the Gorillaz have infringed the copyright of my song Time Warm claiming their song Stylo to be an original compilation. My song sits almost note to note with their release and is a blatant rip off. Time Warp is a very popular song and has been a staple of the DJ scene for many years and I feel total disrespect from Gorillaz and their management company, especially as they are an established act. I am very angrey that this was not picked up by our mutual publisher EMI’s administration division. It’s such an obvious copy that from day one the band and their management should have taken control of this situation with EMI publishing. I would like the outcome to be that the band admits that they have lifted my song, that I have a full credit for the song and an apology from the band.”

After the jump for the comparison side by side!

Stylo / Time Warp

The melodies are very similar, but Gorillaz have definitely sped up the song with a cooler beat. But Eddy does have a point.

Well the Gorillaz song is not faster, also I could find 18 different songs that sound similar. Joe Satriani had a better case against Cold Play and he was wrong.

If Eddy wants to play that game… I always thought "Electric Avenue" (released in 82) was ripping of "Coming Up" (released in 80) by Paul McCartney. Unfortunately, I don't think McCartney will waste his time, unless of course he stops making money.

Yes Gorillaz is slower – but come on! The melody is identical! And although the Gorillaz bassline is slightly different the key and the monophonic synth sonic complexion is also identical. Legally speaking an identical melody presents an unanswerable case. Gorillaz have a major problem here.

Realistically, it's a repetition of 3 notes. I'm sure there are so many songs in the world with these 3 notes in, probably repeated once or twice.

I would have to agree. the only thing the same is the three synth notes

This sounds pretty similar, but it's also really short so I don't know if there's anything to this claim. I guess a judge will sort things out at this point since the album has already been released to the public.
