I’m the Mothman

So I’m not exactly sure what it was about the comment I posted that made Stephen decide I had the right stuff to write for this site, but hey I’ll give it my best shot and we’ll see what happens. People will either read it or they won’t I guess.

Quickly let me tell you a little bit about me. My name is Justin Robert, and I’ve been a musician for the past 24 years of my life. I’m mostly a drummer, but also went to school back in the day of ADATs for music production, I’ve made a few VST synths, and play some other things like guitar, bass, keys, vocals and whatnot. I’ve recorded a plethora of albums on my own that date back to the mid 90s. My early days I was the drummer for the hardcore band Lincoln from West Virginia, which happens to be why I chose the name Mothman as my moniker, since this Winged folkloric menacing creature is from my home state. I currently reside in Saint Petersburg, FL which is a nice town with lots of sun and good people.

One thing that might make my posts a little different than most of the people on here is that I literally have been ignoring mainstream American music since early in life. When I say ignoring, I mean it. I still have never heard a Lady Gaga song and basically could care less what she/he/it sounds like. This music I mostly listen to these days is Brazilian or Latin influenced. However, I also sometimes become obsessed with very random songs and soundtracks from the 1980s. The Scarface soundtrack for example is a favorite of mine these days with great cheese-ball tracks like She’s On fire, Dance Dance Dance and Rush Rush. I guess this is because of my love of synthesis and electronics from the 80s.

So why do I ignore modern American music? Quite simply because it sucks. It sucks bad. It’s like fake music that is totally based on image instead of musical quality. Most pop songs have some repetition of completely meaningless lyrics that just repeat over top of some Roland workstation preset. The so called “Modern Rock” bands of today are still ripping off Pearl Jam style vocals after like 15 years with crappy mid-range-less guitar tones. It’s bad enough to keep ripping off such an old sound but when the original sucked as well, there’s just no hope at all there. “Punk Rock” or the watered down version of it today has to be some of the worst music ever made. This music basically sounds exactly like pop music of today, they just have more tattoos and ripped clothing. Old punk was cool… when I was like 12. But seriously, I can’t understand why people in their 30s would still be into this music, after like 20 years of 3 chord crap, don’t you get tired of such basic songmanship?

The Grammys are freakin’ hilarious. This is basically the equivalent of Pro Wrestling if it were translated into music. None of it is real, a bunch of dumb people watch it, and it’s 100% based on image. The major label music scene is a joke that real music lovers completely ignore. The longer the Internet and free information is around, the more and more people are starting to wake up as to how badly this crap sucks.

Basically what happened to our music is that record executives started to see how rich they could become with it back in the 1960s – 70s and started paying radio stations to play only their music, excluding the small artist from the masses. Then the so called “Payola” was made illegal, but was sidestepped by the industry by the invention of the “independent promoter” The IP is a contractor to the majors and not an official employee of them, so is allowed to pay the radio stations thousands of dollars to play the music they want. Since the majors pay the IP, then the IP pays the radio stations, they still get away with buying off the radio stations.

The people that run the popular music industry in this country don’t care about music at all, they only care about money. In my personal opinion, they must hate music, since they so uncaringly do so much to destroy it.

So there you have it, a small introduction and a rant. In the future I hope to introduce you to some good music, rant a little more about bad music, and try to make an entertaining read you can slack off to at work.

That’s all for now,

Mothman

Holy wall of text Batman! Tell me what you reall think ;) I think I was right about inviting you to the site, I'll admit I kind of cyberstalked you for a moment and looked at your site and music (actually I'll update this post to send you some traffic and link you as a friend site). Something told me to reach out and say hi.

I agree with you that the music is much more repetitive, it's because the digital generation has such a short attention that the message has to be pulsed to them over and over to immerse them in whatever story or idea the artist is selling. I'M A PIMP, I'M A PIMP, GIVE IT UP MOTHERFUCKERS I'M A PIMP! You have to admit, repetition gets the point across.

I'm mostly amused by the music industry's self-accolades and the gyrations of vanity and gluttony. You give me a few million dollars and some sycophants I honestly think I might be just corruptable. But that's all part of the show as well, isn't it?

Welcome to the party, Justin! Glad to have you on board ;) I figure you guys are going to try and drown out my everyday pop madness and news with bands we've never heard of. It's all good, though. Music makes people happy, no matter the genre. So write away! :)

The internet is the great equalizer, all those manufactured pop bands will eventually have to compete based on merit, not how good their publicist is. Though I will say I am entertained by a few of them, not everything big label is bad.

Thanks peeps! Yeah I'm sure if I was paid enough I'd sample some one liner catch phrase a billion times as well, I really don't like being poor. But you'll see as I post more of these I'm not totally as "underground" as I come off in here. Maybe it could just really be that I am completely out of touch! lol. Maybe this site will get me paying more attention to pop stars, even if it is just to rag on them :P But I will say that I give any music a fair chance, even if it is mainstream gobalty-guk.
