Miley Cyrus blasts country music

by on March 22, 2010 | 10 Comments

Given that her father, Billy Ray Cyrus made his fortune singing country music, you wouldn’t think that teen queen Miley Cyrus would be slamming the entire genre. But, never fear, she doesn’t disappoint.

She said, “It scares me, that’s why. It feels contrived on so many levels. Unless you’re wearing a cowboy hat and cowboy boots and singing and whining about your girlfriend or boyfriend leaving you it’s not going to sell. I think that’s why my dad finally got out of it. You have to wear those cowboy boots and be sweet as pie. It makes me nervous, the politics of it all.”

What do you think of Miley’s statement?

I think she is right to a degree, country music isnt what it used to be. These days it all pop country. Like taylor swift that isn't country its pop music. The radio just wants the big name stuff not whats real anymore. Hank Williams is rolling is his grave.

I really think Miley doesn't realize that country music is the most popular music in this decade, especially in sales. She has had a hit in country music and now she's gonna turn her back on it!!! She has a pretty voice just right for country. BUT, she will not make it in POP. She doesn't compare to Kelley Clarkson or Mariah Carey. I just don't think she has the range in her voice that those singers have. It's like she's trying to be another Paris Hilton. Controversial!!! No one will ever be like "Madonna", the Queen of controversy. Savannah Georgia

you are dumb. country is no where close to being the most popular music. and def not in sales. rock easily outsells country music. it probably even doubles the sales of country.

She obviously hasn't listened to real country….probably only Taylor Swift.
She's just jealous because country music didn't accept her..

i think she should do what she wants to do. more power to her!! and i dont think she has to be jealous of anything, she has the world at her feet.

She was just saying what anyone who hangs out at music sites like Billboard, for example, knows. That when people talk about music, it's not just about the music. Large numbers of people actually think Rock and Roll is a lifestyle. So if you put a recording by Miley next to a rocker, and don't tell people it's Miley, they may prefer her music. But if you tell them it's Miley, all of a sudden it's Disney, and they say it's not rock. Country music is just as bad, and in many ways worse. You don't even want to know the amount of energy people spend arguing over what's country, and what's not. Miley's half-brother, who she loves dearly, is covered with tatoos. Would he be accepted into country music with open arms? Instead of people taking away the lesson that people are different, and we should approach them with love in our hearts, it's about exclusion. I will support Miley in whatever genre she chooses. Go Miley!

That's ok..country music fans prefer artists that have the ability to sing. Any time I have heard her sing live on television it has been HORRIFIC!

    • mfan

I have heard her sing LIVE three times and she sounds great!

Wow Miley continues to put her foot in her mouth. I don't care whether or not she likes country music but sometime she should just keep her opinions to her self. She sounds so stuck up all the time and like she thinks she's better than just about everyone on the planet. I personally cannot stand her because she's just such a complete b****. She really needs to learn when to keep her mouth shut!!!

As a child I grew up listening to her father, This statement she made is sad and completly false. Billy Ray Cyrus is still a Country singer. Although his type of country has always been on the edge. His music ( if people chose to get past certain songs) is very different. The saddest part is this girl could never hold a candle to the natural talent her father has. Her fame was built on his reputation…..
Weather she wants to admit it or not most of the people who started following her show were original Billy Ray Cyrus fans, His fan base is very loyal. The outright rudeness of this statement is sad because those of us who watched her father Struggle and never give up, were sad to hear her statement.
As I have for 15 plus years I will continue to be Billy Ray Cyrus's fan, As for his daughter I don't think so………
some children need to learn respect for the path that gave them what they have…..
