Video: Stephen Colbert disses Susan Boyle at the Grammys

by on February 01, 2010 | 6 Comments

At last night’s Grammy Awards, Stephen Colbert opened the show by razzing just about everybody in attendance, and even one who wasn’t there, Susan Boyle.

He started off by saying, “We are here tonight to celebrate what I believe is our most precious right, the right of celebrities to congratulate each other.”

Then, after trying to be “cool” for his daughter, he hit out at Susan Boyle. He said, “Congratulations to all of you, but what I want to know is — Why isn’t Susan Boyle here? I mean, she accomplished something huge this year. You all may have brought the sexy back, but she sent it away again! No thanks Sexy, we’re just going with good singing this year.”

He added, “Seriously, you may be cool here but this year your industry was saved by a 48 year old Scottish cat lady in sensible shoes. So, give it up for Susan Boyle! congratulations, Susan!”

Check out the video, after the jump!

Too funny or too far? What do you think? I loved it, I thought it was hilarious. He does satire, people, lighten up.

It just shows that although the Grammies maybe about sexy musicians, many who have to mime but cannot (But make very good ventuiaquists). It is all or should be about Music, people who can perform, and sing to bring out the spirit of the music to touch their audiences Worldwide no matter what background.
Well done Susan you can Sing!

Stephen was dissing the "cool" people, dissing a population that creates an event to celebrate celebrities.

I watched it last night, and I watch Stephen Colbert. I felt on many levels he was out of his element, but. When he said that about Susan Boyle, being that she had the #1 female album release of the year, I think Stephen was generally asking WHY? isn't she here. He wasn't being rude, I think he actuallys respects her.

I was mortified by Steven Colber's mean, inappropriate, uncalled for put-downs of Susan Boyle. What did she ever do to him? This is not an awards show designed to build up the popular and tear down the up and coming. And an up and coming who has obviously struggled her whole life to gain success and self-confidence, and has finally achieved it! I hope he apologizes to Susan for that.

I watch Colbert all the time and consider myself a member of the "Colbert Nation". However, last night he was NOT COO
    L. He was not funny. I think he meant to compliment Susan' s success and singing ability but by dissing her looks he lost my respect. She is a real woman, not someone trying to be a sex symbol. His remark made her seem "unworthy" somehow. I don't think he meant it just that way. I am a 100% Susan Boyle Fan. Beyonce and all the others have their place. Susan is different. I don't think the great Rosemary Clooney would have fit in with today's crowd either. Susan deserves more recognition for her beautiful voice. The Brit awards ignored her too. Such a shame they all think they are such cool people.

It would have been nice if the headlines would have read that Colbert congratulates Susan, which would have been a positive spin on it, but as usual, the papers will focus on the negative. I love Susan, I hate to see her "dissed" in anyway. I don't know what this man's intention's were, but why does the reporting always emphasis the negative when it comes to Susan?
