Harps grocery store censors Us Weekly cover of Elton John & David Furnish!

On January 18, 2011, Us Weekly debuted Elton John and partner David Furnish’s new baby, Zachary on the front cover. The happy singer talked about the birth of their son and said that they wouldn’t be spoiling him, but lavishing love on him.

Seems all well and good, right? (It is, that baby is so freakin’ cute!) That is, until I checked my Twitter feed and found this disturbing piece. Apparently there’s a grocery store in Arkansas called Harps, who is censoring the front cover of that particular issue of Us Weekly.

Jennifer Huddleston tweeted this message out to numerous people in the span of three hours, “This was taken at my local grocery store. I was shocked and horrified. Can you help bring attention to this? http://t.co/sqYhBzc”. The link shows you the photo below, taken of the censorship of Elton and David — BECAUSE they are an openly gay couple. She tweeted, “They are saying they need to keep children from seeing it, because it is a gay family.”

In case you’ve never heard of Harps, Jen has the details on that, as well. She tweeted, “Harps is a local grocery store chain here in Arkansas. Please feel free to share their phone number:870-425-6556.”

Here’s their website information, in addition to that. Contact them and let them know that this is just UNACCEPTABLE.

  2. This is ridiculous. Children are not born bigots; they are raised that way. Products of their environment. They will learn that there are different types of love in the world and different people. Protect them from predators and physical danger, not LIFE. I do hope the people that own this store don’t call themselves christians because they are judging others and it is not their place to judge.

  3. I’ll never go there again. This isn’t the kind of thing we need to be encouraging with money. After so many gay suicides recently this type of thing needs to be frowned upon. This is exactly the wrong time to be doing this type of thing. What were they thinking?!

  4. for one thing, Jen got the phone # wrong…for another thing….people, you’ve got to remember this is the bible-belt…..I think Harp’s was wrong to cover that issue…I have seen worse on magazine covers…and wasn’t Clay Aiken on a magazine cover with his new baby and he’s gay also…who cares…

  5. This seems extreme only if you don’t have children. I decide what my children see, not the media. That doesn’t make me bigoted, it makes me a caring mother. Bestiality, sodomy, pornography, etc. are not concepts that I will allow my children to explore. Have at it with your own children and leave mine alone! What you do in the privacy of your own home is your business, but when you decide to use my children’s purview as a stage for your private issues, you trounce my rights and I’ll fight to the death to defend my right to rear my children the way I, and only I, see fit. It’s amazing how closed-minded gay activists are when it comes to everyone else’s rights not to be exposed to their agenda, all the while claiming that everyone else is closed-minded.

  6. I’m going to do all my grocery shopping at Harp’s. It’s time someone took a stand on the side of decency.
