Regis Philbin quit 'Regis & Kelly' over pay cut

Regis Philbin shocked everyone with the announcement that he’s leaving Live With Regis & Kelly on January 18, 2011.

Reportedly, the shock announcement came because of a pay cut that ABC was trying to put on Regis — and he wasn’t having any part of that. The executives at ABC talked about a new contract for Regis, but explained that he would have to take a pay cut because the show wasn’t performing as well as in the past — and also because he takes time off.

TMZ reports:

Sources say Reeg is currently pulling in between $18 and $20 million a year.

Regis, we’re told, was angry at the offer and that was the trigger for his announcement this week that he’s leaving the show.

TMZ first reported … Regis told Kelly Ripa about his decision 15 minutes before they went on the air. Initially we were told she was stunned but not angry. Now we’ve learned she was furious — partly because, as one source says, “She felt it showed a total lack of respect for her.”

We’re told the entire production team is angry at Regis because they feel he hurt the show by blindsiding everyone.

As for Regis’ agent, Jim Griffin, Reeg fired him. We’re told Regis feels Griffin did not negotiate the upcoming deal effectively.

Well, we will have to just wait and see where he goes from there. Stay tuned!

    ok folks. the man is like 900 years old anyways. cant say im all torn up about it, that fake happiness is…well..nuesiating. kelly pushes it above and beyond. so HEY maybe they can find someone halfway real to replace him. and ANYONE i dont care who they are are going to get a bit pissed off when told they are going to get a pay cut. thats your boss, telling you, ‘your not that good anymore’. no matter who you are….bound to be hurt feelings there. so kelly….suck it up…pull your head from your bum and put yourself in his shoes. he started the damn show. youd be offended to if you eat enough food to muster up the energy to do more than fake joy at EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    what making multi millions a year isnt good enough? regis just needs to get over himself there are people in this country struggling to make it from paycheck to paycheck and hes not hurting for money.

    Sounds like bull to me…he is in his Golden Years, has new grand children, its time to chill and enjoy!! He’s still going to be busy, just at his own speed!! He will be missed on the show, but go see him Live!! Kelly will be fine!

    Regis quit because he was embarrassing himnself on air with alzheimers. He can’t even remember the name of the person he had dinner with last night. Kelly has to constantly cover for him. He can’t do live TV anymore. I just hope they don’t get her dumb husband to do the show.

    that lack Courage would tell everyone that he
    was offered less money and that he was asked
    to take a pay cut.
    But I doubt if Regis is a Person of Courage.
