Two And A Half Men Season 9 Episode 1 Questions

Now that Ashton Kutcher has officially made his debut on Two And A Half Men, we had to take a hard look at the show’s premiere episode. I was taken aback at how many cracks they laid out at Charlie’s expense!

Firstly, when starting off with the funeral, no one really seems to be mourning their loss. Instead, Charlie’s ex-girlfriends are all there, making cracks about how he gave them STDs. His mother is there to stop the cracks, but jokes seriously about selling his house. Is there no respect?!? For a funeral service, it seems more dependent on the jokes that they can make, instead of mourning a brother, a son and an uncle for the show’s characters.

The show continues to lay on the disrespect to Charlie’s character by having Alan vacuum up his brother with a dust buster.

We know that Charlie Sheen really rubbed the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre, the wrong way during his meltdown, but these people are expecting the viewing public to believe that this family wouldn’t adequately mourn the loss of his character?!? Are they that heartless to think that would just vacuum up his brother’s remains? Yes, it’s a comedy, but there’s no time for that really when dealing with a funeral scene. Right?!?

Still, the show’s new character, Walden Schmidt, appears on the balcony of Charlie’s old house. Out of the blue! Couldn’t they think of a better way to work Walden in there?

Prior to that, they had John Stamos looking at Charlie’s place and then he basically called Charlie gay.

From tonight’s episode, if never having watched the show, here’s what I would think about it:

Charlie Harper’s family really sucks. They try to sell his house at the funeral and his own brother vacuums up his ashes with a dust buster. Alan seems to care more about his new friend Walden than he did his own brother. Charlie’s ex-girlfriends have no class and tell everyone about the diseases he spread to them. Rose said he proposed, she said yes, and then she found him the hotel room with another woman. So on top of all the abuse they’ve already hurled at Charlie, he’s a cheater, as well. In addition to that, he also had no money in his estate, and three mortgages on the beach house. So he’s broke, too?!?

Did Chuck Lorre think to give Charlie’s character any redeeming qualities in his final moments in their lives? This episode was not believable, unless they wanted us to believe that Charlie lived with a bunch of douchebags who only cared about his house.

What did you think of their exit for Charlie’s character? How about Walden’s entrance? Did you buy it at all?

To recap, the show basically showed that Charlie is a diseased, cheating, broke and gay womanizer. What did you think of all of that? Were you saddened by their portrayal of Charlie at his funeral or afterward? What did you think of Walden’s weird entrance? Could they have done better? Did Charlie deserve better? UPDATE: It’s being reported that Charlie Sheen’s ex-wife, Denise Richards, was offered $100,000 to appear at his character’s funeral. Should she have done it?

    agree with your article. Some people are trying to make this about Charlie Vs Ashton…but regardless, the opening was crass and unbelieveable

      The show was in very poor taste and showed no respect for the deceased
      Charlie.  Twenty minutes of the show was enough.  The producers should have swallowed their pride and bruised egos and brought Charlie Sheen back.  Whether you liked Charlie Sheen or not, he is a tremendous talent and the producers blew it.

    i think you’re a tad off.
    i think the characters where very ‘in character’, and any crack at charlie was not out of context nor out of proportion.
    alan vacuuming charlie ashes came after his heart felt talk to the urn so, there was a balance there.
    charlie’s mom spoke up for him during the funeral, and only after spoke about the house sale. again, in characeter and in proportion.
    rose also did not make any out of proportion joke at charlie before feeling for him in the funeral as well.
    overall i think the episode was very well balanced. chuck lorre could have torn charlie a bigger one.
    then ashton entering the show i think was cool. bottom line is ashton had to buy the house. it would not be more interesting to have him just walk in during the open house and buying it. plus, his characters fragile moment fit just right with alan’s character. the same alan that put up with charlie’s abuse because he understood he was a better person.
    anymay, overall, i rather enjoyed the ‘passage’ from charlie to waldon and i am an avid fan of 2.5 men and charlie.

      I would have to disagree. The way they ended Charlie’s role in the show is a disrespect to the character and the show’s fame. Lorre just destroyed his reputation along with the best show on CBS.

      Grow up Lorre, quit acting like a 5 year old and bring back Charlie so everyone is happy and you make alot of $$$$$.

        lorre has no business to respect charlie after the charlie lorre flame war. lorre tried to make things work for two season, s7 and s8 and then the name calling was the final straw.
        imo lorre what plentyfully grown up to not dis charlie more than he did .

    Have you never seen the show? The show’s foundation was that all characters were disrespectful douchebags. Charlie was always portrayed as living from big paycheck to big paycheck (they’ve already talked about his massive mortgage and debts before). All characters always treated death and funerals with morbid jokes. Evelyn was seen in other shows reading the obituaries to find house selling opportunities. Charlie was always portrayed as a scummy, lying, cheating womanizer and in one episode the show even put Charlie and Alan in bed together after a threesome that went bad. Psychotic Rose pushing a cheating Charlie in front of a train was the most natural and believable way for Charlie to go.

      1. The way they portrayed Charlie after his death was completely out of the oblivion… In a few seasons back he manages to buy a ferrari and now he struggles to pay his house with 3 mortgages? If Charlie had so many diseases who would have died in season 3 or 4. And more importantly, all the characters on the show had feelings of guilt in previous seasons, But when Charlie dies…they don’t care?! Lorre what were you thinking?!

        Charlie harper always had money problems! He even stated in earlier shows that his house was a “stack of cards” and that he had mortgages, I think your forgetting that this is a comedy stop taking the characters reaction so seriously. I love Charlie sheen but the show was going down hill, now with Ashton kutcher it will be a fresh start and the two and a half men will go on for many more seasons

    Very disappointing, there’s a reason his character was so great and he was the highest paid tv actor. But his family was always there for him on the show, but the family doesn’t mourn his loss??……just shows that Chuck Lorre is a classless director, who obviously didn’t recognize where his money came from. Get over it Lorre. You’ve ruined the best show ever.

    I agree totally with your article.
    I thought the beginning – at the funeral – with the bowling shirt (which Charlie detested in real life) was so lame.  It was totally unbelievable his family would behave that way Come on Chuck.
    As for Ashton”s new character? It was thrown in too quickly – they needed to ween his character in at least for the first two episodes.
    Disgusting really.
    I feel bad that Ashton is involved in this war.
    Hope it gets better for Ashton’s sake.

    I was aghast at the entire show. Charlie’s character deserved a better ending than this total lack of humanity or, compassion. It blatantly showed the producer’s revenge at Sheen’s previous commentaries and behavior. However, in the interest of the viewing public, he could have shown professionalism as, most of the viewers really liked Charlie in the show, but not his off-camera, real life antics. I found this ending disrespectful and unrealistic.

    I liked Kutcher in “That 70′s Show”, but I thought that the first episode of 2 and a half men with him in it was unbelievable and stupid. I won’t watch the show again.  Charlie’s comedy roast was funny.

    I was a faithful two and a half men viewer from it’s very first episode, Monday night will never again be filled with laughter!! Chuck Lorre was a complete arrogant fool for how he handled the entire situation!  And he has now effectively killed the best comedy show on tv in the last decade!!!! I won’t watch this show ever again.  Hopefully a new comedy will spring up to take it’s place.  Sorry Ashton you just don’t fit in to this show’s original scheme and well despite his private woe’s Charlie Sheen made the show the fabulous comedy it was!!!!!

    Chuck showed his class. The whole show was resonance of his personal hatred towards charlie. pathetic story line, not single funny joke, unnecessary nudity, and the last 2.5 show that I will watch.

    Ok, to everyone complaining he didn’t get the proper send off on this show think about it this way for a second.

    1. All the characters in the show (aside from Jake and Alan) have a reason to detest Charlie. He always cheated on his girlfriends so them all being there making fun of him is just funny considering Charlie use to have dreams on the show of his funeral and this is what he would dream. Plus, Alan did stand up for his brother to a point and even said his words to Charlie’s ashes.

    2. Why are you all hating on Lorre for this? Charlie brought this all on himself. He was the highest paid actor on TV. It’s the same as Megan Fox not being in the new transformers cause she called Michael bay Hitler. simply put if you insult your director and piss them off you’re going to get fired no matter. Charlie is lucky they weren’t bigger asses to him about it. Plus, Charlie OBVIOUSLY doesn’t care about getting ripped on he got roasted on comedy central an hour later. He even said in a review to the show he liked it and thought it was funny.

    3. Now this is what upsets me the most. Why all the negativity pointed towards Ashton? His performance was solid for his first outing at it. It was reported months ago there was a little awkwardness at first between the cast and Ashton but they got over it and all get along well now so i’m sure it’s only going to get progressively better. Which in terms of the first show gives me high hopes for the season. Plus you can’t deny the rating they got either,

      things in the show. However the Charlies characters charisma makes 
      makes people automatically like him.. and his family would not have acted
      that way.. His ashes being spilt like no big deal… give me a break..

      and put his ego and pride away and tried to recover what used to be a

    classy tastes Egyptian cotton, extensive alcohol use, its not class but he even
    allocated money for hookers in an envelope and unlimited credits cards for con-artist
    girls friend. What is Lorre thinking???? People who watch the show are fools??
    We just laugh and that’s it?? We are so dumb that we can’t remember the details
    of the characters and the show??? Lorres is insulting viewers!!!

    And worse part is though
    Lorre has no respect for the show he is scared that the new season will fail
    without charley. That’s why there is no dead body showen, Lorre you money and
    fame minded pig. Shame on you!!!! And think about it guy want to big 1billion
    dollars to get his love to be back with him and then same night he does a two random
    girls. Dude get a life!!!! And Lorre is so scared that show will fall he uses Ashton’s to be nacked to distract viewers
    from his sick mind episode and the new beginning. I hope the show will fail.

    First of all, lets be clear about this, Charlie will never come back to the show, well all know this. 

    As for the episode itself, it felt like the one liners seemed forced in a way, there just wasn’t any charisma at all. And yes, Chuck was taking extreme liberties to put in every mis-deed that Charlie did in real life and include it in the show. To be honest, it was a bit distasteful. The first half was completely taken to the extreme, and I felt like the whole funeral was a synthetic roast to Charlie. That being said the latter half of the show felt entirely rushed. And unfortunately, Ashtons preformance just felt one dimentional. I give him props he succeeds at other acting gigs and movies that he has done, and will give him credit as an actor. But, I felt like he had no fire, no passion, and absolutely no flare. I also noticed that in one scene he would be moderately intelligent, and then in the next scene act like a dumb blond.He would be entirely heartbroken, only to have had no problem taking 2 women up to a room that is not his and sleeping in it. I could not grasp his character or make a clear picture of what he was supposed to come across as, or what his intentions are at all. 

    Overall it seems to me that this was a forced preformance by all that were in this season, not to mention that things progressed entirely too fast and for little or no reason at all. 

    If I would give this a rating, it would be a 3/10.

    Lorre really demeaned Charlie he was a great character + actor and I cant believe that no-one mounded Charlie Harper, I know Rose was his stalker but she was totally in love with him and if I remember correctly didn’t him and Chelsea end on good terms? I was very surprised she wasn’t upset I always thought she had class… guess I was wrong. I know its sad but I almost cried seeing Charlie funeral I wanted him back on the show. I actually thought it was nice Alan was gunna put his ashes on the beach but as you all know that kinda got ruined…… I enjoyed the bit when Ashton came into it but I’m still not sure how the show will go now there’s no Charlie Harper guess we will see…… Charlie if  you ever read this please come back to the show we all miss you !!!!

    Lorre try not to ruin any of the other episodes your starting to show the world that everything Charlie said is right.

    2 and a half men season 10 …hw it will be…..Walden Schmidt is watching tv…. door bell rings Jake Harper opens the door…Its Charlie Harper in his Hot Shots attire with a machine gun in his hand….Jake: Hey Charlie. Charlie: I am Back. Walden: Shit! Charlie blows him down in a Inglorious Basterds style. Alan enters in after some time and sees Walden on floor and Charlie drinking beer in the back. Alan: Looks like you were pissed of with that guy by the way where the hell were you. Charlie: Hell I was pissed off was just pumping for a return. Berta enters in. Berta: I am not cleaning that dead asshole again. Now looks at Charlie. And then they all look at the camera. and Mennnn……By Jainit Kapadia   just a try on humor….. began with this free feel to express ur feelings on this and on the show btw Walden is being played by Ashton, so no hard feelings for him…..

    Wouldn’t it be nice that all this season 9 is a dream of Charlie’s and at the end of the season he wakes up and even meets Walden Schmidt who is real in the show not just a dream. That would be a nice way to bring Charlie Sheen back :P

    Director didn’t take the fans in to consideration only himself. We loved Charlie and one episode to take a look at why would of been great. As a viewer we didn’t get anything other than a load of cheap cracks at Charlie Sheen, but what about Charlie Harper (and the gay part was ridiculous. ) Poor show chuck.. its all about you i guess not us fans who kept this show going.

    Not only could they have done it better, they could have picked a better actor to fill Sheen’s shoes… say Rob Lowe or Richard Lewis (who nearly stole the episode in which he played Charlie’s accountant).

    What were they thinking with this episode? I mean with all that writing talent, this is the best you could come up with Chuck Lorre? You couldn’t just do the cheap Hollywood stunt of using flashbacks to ease the way for Kutcher’s entrance? No I guess not because this premiere showed how much it’s personal for you with Sheen.

    Two and a Half Men is done without its star and Lorre should start packing up the set. Kelso ain’t no Charlie Harper and no amount of nudity or goofy looks is going to fix that.

    basically Chuck Lorre is a humongous douche bag, to do what he did to charlie character was immature and also ignorant. i agree with the others he’s a classless director and frankly he must not know who was the face of the show. why cast Ashton, not to say he’s not funny(that 70′s show was great) but he isn’t ment to play that role.also how he just ended up on deck trying to kill himself over his wife leaving him and he is crying his self to death, then all of a sudden he has a threesome in char lie’s bed (which is disrespectful), then he suddenly all over and decides that he will buy the houseand everything is fine as could be….Mr Lorre you my friend are a class A douche….and by you showing that episode you are just proving the fact that charlie sheen is Bi-Winning….

    Chuck Lorre are you gay? why have Aston naked multiple times, and last time i checked the show was a comedy. and hence the fact you obviously gotten brain damage for season 9 comedy suppose to make people laugh, that episode wasn’t funny, i knew it would fail without sheen, but i keep an open mind and still watched it, i regret it, you turned maybe one of the greatest shows of all time into crap in one episode, i can tell you that your fan base is dropping rapidly unless you come to you senses, stop being holding a grudge and hire back sheen, he was making 2 million an episode for a reason…..

    chuck remember that episode when Jon cryer was about to move out but then at the last second he came back like a groveling dog kissing charlies ass, its your turn now, you know and we all know either sheen comes back or your show is off the air, i know CBS is like what the hell is wrung with Lorre, they properly got there finger on cancel button. oh and also who ever your casting director is sucks. ashton wasnt ment to play that role, and day by day your losing more and more fans.     I don’t see anything wrong with the first episode. There was a Charlie Funeral in one of the previous episodes, where all his girlfriends were spitting on him in the coffin … He has been broke in some of the episodes. He once pretended to be gay as well .. so i don’t see all the fuss … Walden’s entrance was Ok, because all of us expected him to walk in and view the house .. but it didn’t happen that way .. they were very original…

    the concept of the from the first place was based on mutual disrespect among characters.but i don’t think bring kutcher was abad idea or investment . any people should dynamics change in the shows for example one tree hill when they removed my favourite. the show went on and its good. so give the directors and producers a chance

    They ruined memory of Charlie, now them…

    They should be the called lunatics not Charlie. He is a great guy, just these people are spreding awfull rumours about his life, which are probably not even true…

    I basiscly wanted to watch the episode cause people told me it was crap, so lets see the crap… I almost vomited (spell check), so not gonna watch another episode of this  inquisition against Charlie…    

    This show must NOT go on!

    So to recap it all, the show sucks without Sheen, the writers are obviously insane, kutcher blows (he will forever be a kid), jake isnt cute as he was in the starting days (cant imagine why) he is still stupid if not more, everyone hates Charlie, doesnt matter if they loved him in the previous seasons…..
