Avril Lavigne Opens Up About Lyme Disease In 'People' Magazine

Canadian singer Avril Lavigne is featured on the cover of the April 13, 2015 issue of People magazine and inside she discusses her battle with Lyme disease. Most recently, Lavigne alluded to an illness with a fan in a direct message on Twitter – but now she is opening up about her health woes in the latest issue of People.

Lavigne spent her 30th birthday hanging out and partying with friends, but she didn’t feel like partying at all. She’d been feeling awful for a few months, but her doctors couldn’t nail down the reason she’d been feeling ill.

She revealed to the magazine, “I could barely eat, and when we went to the pool, I had to leave and go lie in bed. My friends asked, ‘What’s wrong?’ I didn’t know.”

She felt lethargic and lightheaded for months and she received her diagnosis of Lyme disease. She said, “I had no idea a bug bite could do this. I was bedridden for five months. I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move. I thought I was dying.”

Her mother moved in to take care of her while her husband Chad Kroeger helped while on breaks with his Nickelback tour. She said, “There were definitely times I couldn’t shower for a full week because I could barely stand. It felt like having all your life sucked out of you.”

Her fans kept questioning where she was and that helped her get better. She revealed, “They were asking about me since I was MIA, so I mentioned to one fan directly that I wasn’t feeling good. The get-well messages and videos they sent touched me so deeply.”

She added, “This was a wake-up call. I really just want to enjoy life from here on out.”
