Benedict Cumberbatch has married theater director Sophie Hunter in a Valentine’s Day ceremony on England’s Isle of Wight.
Cumberbatch’s spokeswoman, Karon Maskill, confirmed the weekend ceremony which was witnessed by close family and friends.
The ‘Sherlock Holmes’ actor, 38, has been nominated for his role as code-breaking genius Alan Turing in “The Imitation Game.” Turing helped win World War II when he cracked a very complex Nazi machine-based code cipher. Touring was later prosecuted for homosexuality. Two years after being forced into chemical castration, Touring committed suicide.
Hunter, 36, and Cumberbatch first appeared together in the 2009 thriller “Burlesque Fairytales.” The couple announced their engagement in November and announced last month that they are expecting their first child.
Benedict Cumberbatch and his new wife were wed at the 12th Century St. Peter & St. Paul church on Saturday afternoon.
Among guests at the wedding was Andrew Scott, who plays Sherlock Holmes’ arch-nemesis Moriarity in “Sherlock.”
Congrats to Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter on their marriage and soon-to-arrive child.
