Charlie Hunnam Reveals 'Fifty Shades Of Grey' Led To Nervous Breakdown

If you are like many women, you loved the idea of Charlie Hunnam taking on the role of Christian Grey in the upcoming movie adaptation of the E.L. James “Fifty Shades Of Grey” books. He signed on for the racy role, but then backed out — leaving the role to fall to Irish actor Jamie Dornan. It wasn’t a decision that the actor made lightly, despite what you may have read on the internet.

In fact, Hunnam says that the decision led him to having a nervous breakdown. He said, “I wouldn’t have signed up in the first place if I didn’t want to do it. It was a really, really difficult time in my life.”

In addition to having a busy work schedule, Hunnam said that he also had some “family stuff going on”. He revealed that he didn’t give up the role without a struggle. He said, “I bit off more than I could chew and it was painful. I loved the character and I wanted to do it.”

With regard to his schedule, he said, “I was going to finish ‘Sons’ at like 11 p.m. Friday night, get on a plane Saturday morning to Vancouver for ‘Fifty’, missing the whole first week of rehearsal and start shooting Monday morning. And I was going to shoot that film, wrap that on the Wednesday and the following Monday I was going to start shooting ‘Crimson Peak’ in Toronto.”

He added, “I just had like, frankly, something of a nervous breakdown. I just said, ‘I can’t…I can’t. To fail on such a grand scale—because Fifty’s going to be massive, it’s going to be huge. I really didn’t want to fail on such a grand scale and I just couldn’t transition from Jax to Christian Grey in 48 hours.”

What do you think? Are you sad that Hunnam jumped ship from “Fifty Shades Of Grey” or do you think Dornan will do a fine job as Christian Grey? Have your say in the comments section below.
