This week, Evelyn Napier stops by at Downton, much to Mary’s glee. He is in the area investigating estates like Downton, but informs Mary that Downton isn’t at risk. She’s pleased that he has stopped by, as he is another man interested in her. She offers up Downton for him and his boss Charles Blake to stay. We already know that Charles could potentially be another suitor for the widow Mary — which begs the question: When will Evelyn learn not to bring guests to Downton?
Alfred gets a tryout as a chef at the Ritz, much to Daisy’s dismay. Her attitude changes when they learn that he wasn’t accepted.
Mrs. Hughes confronts Anna to tell Mr. Bates the truth about the rape, but she doesn’t want to seal his fate. She knows that Mr. Bates will kill Mr. Green and she doesn’t want him to be hanged for murder. Mr. Bates overhears the conversation and confronts Mrs. Hughes with an ultimatum: tell him the truth or he’s leaving before Anna gets back. Mrs. Hughes coughs up the secret, but tells Mr. Bates that it was some random man who snuck in the kitchen on the night Dame Nellie sang. He is unconvinced and knows that it was Mr. Green, but he won’t let on with Anna — to ease her burden.
Is Edith pregnant? That is the question on our minds after we see her in London and on her way into the doctor’s office. Mr. Gregson is away establishing his residency in order to divorce his insane wife, but the two did spend the night together…
Poor Mr. Moseley can’t seem to catch a break. As Alfred was being tested, Carson offered him a job as a footman, but he opted to think on it instead of accepting right away. When he comes to tell Carson his decision to take the job, he is rebuffed as Alfred won’t be vacating his spot after all.
Lady Grantham gets herself a new lady’s maid in Baxter, but she seems more in cahoots with Mr. Barrow. Why do we get the sneaking suspicion that their connection will revive that of his and O’Brien’s nefarious doings?
Lady Rose seems eager to help with Lord Robert’s birthday party and we’re guessing that she knows the perfect jazz act to help provide entertainment for the evening.
