The guy behind the popular “Sesame Street” character Elmo has been accused of having a sexual relationship with an underage boy. Kevin Clash, the puppeteer, has been accused of having a relationship with a guy who was 16-years-old at the time. Since, he has rebuffed the claims of a sexual relationship and has taken a leave of absence from the popular children’s television show.
“Sesame Street” revealed in a statement that they found no substantiated claims by Kevin’s accuser. Kevin has confirmed that he did, in fact, have a relationship with his accuser, but said that it was consensual.
He said, “I am a gay man. I have never been ashamed of this or tried to hide it. I had a relationship with the accuser. It was between two consenting adults, and I am deeply saddened that he is characterizing it as something other than what it was.”
He added that he was taking a break from the show to deal with the situation. “Sesame Street” reps said that he was merely “taking actions to protect his reputation” and that they have “granted him a leave of absence to do so.”
