Is it a lack of understanding about racist behavior that sent some viewer’s into a tailspin when they watched Katy Perry perform while dressed as a geisha? Was the criticism deserved? Were people over-reacting? Perry was wearing a beautifully designed geisha outfit as she sang “Unconditionally”. She even had traditional Japanese geishas performing along with her. So what did Katy do that warranted the outcry of “racism?”
She dared to wear an outfit that is associated with a different culture than her own. Really? So now it is “politically incorrect” to wear clothing that is identified with other cultures? The AMA stage was colorful, decorative and visually beautiful. Katy was very feminine and lovely. Dang!
Those cultural clothes and props sure did spoil the entire show, didn’t they? Perry believed that she was embracing the beauty, charm and history of Japan, but apparently there were those who found her choice of clothing to be embarrassing, insensitive and racist. The “appropriation” of specific elements from other cultures is now regarded as “taboo.” Who knew?
Quick, now…go clean everything out of your home that might possibly be related to a culture different from your own. Don’t want to risk offending anyone, do you?
