Jamie Dornan plays the role of billionaire S&M playboy Christian Grey in the upcoming adaptation of E.L. James’ wildly popular book Fifty Shades Of Grey. The movie will hit theaters this Valentine’s Day and Dornan has been in hyper promotional mode since he was announced to take on the role of Grey opposite Dakota Johnson’s Anastasia Steele. Now, in a new interview, the actor is opening up about the challenge involved in bringing a character like Christian Grey to life on the big screen.
He revealed that he struggled to find anything to like about Grey. He said, “Christian was a massive challenge. I’ve played a couple of sick, sick dudes, serial killers…and characters who don’t treat women the way society deems appropriate. But it’s just TV, movies – it’s not real. I’ve always had a deep respect for women. I have two sisters. My father spent his career as an obstetrician-gynecologist caring for women. But you have to find something likable in every character you play. I like how driven Christian is. I don’t think I would like him if he was a real dude and we met.”
With regard to his first day on the set of the highly anticipated movie, he said that it was unreal. He said, “The first day was kind of an out of body experience. I got there and they said, ‘Action!’ I’m like, ‘What the f**k is happening? I’m a dad. What?'”
He said that he formed a bond with his co-star Dakota Johnson rather quickly just because of the situations that they both found themselves in. He added, “I’ve never had an on-screen relationship as intense with another actress. We respect and trust each other. Some of the red room stuff was uncomfortable. There were times when Dakota was not wearing much, and I had to do stuff to her that I’d never choose to do to a woman. I felt very protective and aware that it probably wasn’t easy for her to be put in those situations, and exposed.”
Johnson also talked of the movie, saying that she was injured during filming. She revealed, “I got whiplash once from him throwing me on the bed; so f***ing painful. And I wish we had a gag reel from the shoot. One time we were doing a scene in Christian’s kitchen, and I [thought it would be funny] to hide in a cabinet. I pulled the handle, but it was not a real cabinet. The entire set came down on me.”
The actress said that her injuries on the set of the movie helped to break a lot of the tension she was feeling during the intense S&M scenes. She said, “The fact that I could laugh with him was nice. Sometimes I did walk off the set feeling a bit shell-shocked. The drive home from work always helped me snap out of it. And a big glass of wine.”
Despite being proud of the movie, Johnson said that she doesn’t want her family or friends to see it. She added, “My mom came up for a day [during filming]. She’s proud of me. But I don’t want my family to see because it’s inappropriate. Or my brothers’ friends who I grew up with.”
