Will Smith made a triumphant return to box office glory over the Memorial Day Weekend, as “Men In Black III”, the third installment in the sci-fi comedy/action franchise starring Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, racked up $70 million over the four day weekend.
With it’s box office take, MIB3 has taken the top spot at the box office for the weekend, breaking the 21 day hold the superhero adventure “The Avengers” had on the top spot. MIB3 also marks Smith’s first film offering in several years. Smith had been taking some time away from Hollywood to spend time with his family, and to help his children, daughter Willow and son Jaden, launch their respective music and acting careers. MIB3 returns Smith and Jones to their roles of alien busting detectives, last seen in 2002’s MIB2. With the number 1 spot now belonging to MIB3, “The Avengers” falls to number 2 on the list, but the Marvel comics adventure still made enough box office to raise it’s total domestic gross to over $523 billion, effectively making it the fourth all time top earner, as well as only the fourth film to make over half a billion dollars.
Rounding out the top five at the box office were the movie “Battleship” which continued to underperform, earning just over $10 million, bringing it’s total earnings to $44.3 million, far less then it’s reported $200 million dollar budget. The comedy “The Dictator” was at number four with $9.6million and the Warner Brothers horror film “Chernobyl Diaries” finished fifth with $8 million. The summer stampede of blockbusters is now officially underway, as more big ticket films are coming, including the highly anticipated “The Dark Knight Returns”, as well as the reboot of the “Spider-Man” franchise.
