Phillip Phillips' American Idol Performance Video 4/18/12

Tonight’s theme on American Idol is “Now & Then” and we’ll see the same seven competitors take on two songs. Last week, the judges saved Jessica Sanchez in a last minute use of their only save of the season. If you’ve missed last week’s elimination, you can read that recap here. Of course, tonight we are recapping the show LIVE at this link.

Left in the competition are Phillip Phillips, Joshua Ledet, Hollie Cavanagh, Jessica Sanchez, Skylar Laine, Elise Testone and Colton Dixon. There are no more saves, so the competition really has to bring it to avoid elimination.

On tonight’s show, Phillip Phillips is performing U Got It Bad by Usher. He wants to keep it intimate. Can he pick up some new fans with this performance?

Our commentary:

I never thought we would hear Phillip doing a broken down, stripped version of an Usher song, but this was really good. I am digging this one hundred percent. He is the whole package in talent and he can basically sing anything.

Judge’s commentary:

Standing ovation!

Jennifer: “YES, YES, YES!”
Steven: He fools them all of the time. He’s got melody now and it’s just beautiful. It was great tonight.
Jennifer: That was so sexy. It was sexy baby. That was great. She loves when he shows that side of himself.
Randy: He smiles every time he sees him. He feels like he loves it that this year they have a true artist on the stage. Every time he comes up, he tries to be original and himself. He knows who he is. He is “the bomb”.

What did you think of Phillip’s performance tonight? Do you think he has what it takes to be the next American Idol? Was this your favorite performance of the evening? Hit the comments with your thoughts!
