New York based publicist Lois Smith has passed away at the age of 85-years-old on Sunday. We’ve learned that she passed away after suffering a brain hemorrhage after suffering an accidental fall. “Deadline” reports that Lois had fallen down a flight of stairs on Saturday while at a bed and breakfast in Maine. She was said to be staying at the B&B with her husband, Eugene.
In her day, she has represented stars like Marilyn Monroe, Robert Redford, Martin Scorsese, Susan Sarandon, Marlee Matlin and Whitney Houston. Once Marlee learned of the publicist’s passing, she took to her official Twitter account to pay her respects. She tweeted, “So sad to read about passing of publicist & friend Lois Smith. She helped guide me when I did Children Of A Lesser God. I will miss her. Rip. She really set me on the right track when I was so new. She was a great lady.”
In 2010, Lois gave an interview after retiring from the industry. She said, “I’m so glad I’m not doing publicity now. Between celebrity magazines and Web sites, there’s so much out there to be filled up, so much information that has to be put out there simply because those publications exist. First of all, whatever you’re pushing, it becomes a story 30 seconds after you put it out there. I don’t care about hearing so much information minute by minute. People are desperate to fill the space they’ve got; they’ll print anything, go with anything, pursue rumors, and even create them. It’s not what I call publicity.”
May she rest in peace.
