When Sharknado premiered on Syfy on July 10th, there were so many people who were talking about just how bad the movie was. It was so cheesy and campy, but people flocked to Twitter to discuss the awful flick in droves. When it premiered, the movie scored just 1.3 million viewers, but despite that it became a trending topic on Twitter where it was mentioned 5,000 times during the broadcast by itself.
Syfy’s Thomas Vitale said, “Every once in a while, there is a perfect storm – on television. The fans are clamoring for a sequel. Or perhaps it will be a prequel. What we can guarantee is that Sharknado 2 will be lots of fun. We’ll be announcing more details very soon. But we didn’t want our fans to worry they wouldn’t get their fill of more shark fin, I mean, fun next year.”
In addition to all of the media and fan attention that the movie has received, the creators of the flick have invited fans to create a tagline for the upcoming movie. The movie is set to take place in New York and the response has been awesome. Among suggestions for the second film’s tagline are Sharknado 2: Electric Boogaloo, Sharknado 2: Sharks and the City and Sharknado 2: Taking a Bit out of the Big Apple.
With regard to the sequel, producer David Latt said, “Ian Ziering paved the way for the next installment to have Johnny Depp. He’s a trailblazer, so we’re going to go out to Depp next time.”
