Interview: Starlit’s Simara Rose
by roberta on Sep.19, 2007, under Uncategorized

I recently had the chance to ask Starlit’s frontwoman, Simara Rose, a few questions. She was more than happy to oblige. She has such a positive message, as posted on her myspace page, as well as powerful lyrics and rocking riffs.
The music of Starlit is something that I greatly enjoy and with good reason. She is a true entertainer and loves what she does.
On to the interview:
1. Where does your inspiration come from in the music that you make?
Simara included this image to sum up her influences:

2. What inspires the way you express yourself through your outer appearance?
Clothes are important and at the same time, can hold little value in that they are a way to express yourself and in some ways paticular ways of dress and style are art. But clothes and appearance in general don’t say whether someone is a good person or not.
3. What message is most important in your music?
Persafuckinvere.
4. If you could be doing anything else other than performing, what would it be?
Nothing, it’s all I want to do. But it branches off into other areas like set design and video ideas.
5. If you could record a song with a male vocalist, who would you want that to be? Why?
David Bowie, of course. Him and Billy Holiday are my favorites, he is innovative and revolutionary.
A big heartfelt thank you to Simara Rose, sparkling and sweet singer for Starlit, for taking the time to answer some questions.
How to interview a rock star: Sarah Jezebel Deva
by roberta on Aug.23, 2007, under articles
Here’s my Sarah Jezebel Deva story. For those of you who don’t know who she is, she’s one of the singers in the death metal band, Cradle of Filth. I really respect Sarah’s talent and kindness, so I will shed light on what happened in our non-interview.
This was totally my fault and I see this now.
Firstly, I will say that I emailed Miss Deva on myspace with no intention on gaining a response. I was wrong. She responded back to my inquiry rather quickly, to my delight.
My inquiry was just this:
Hello, I am a big fan of your music and was wondering if you could make time for a short, ten question interview. That would be so awesome and it would give your fans more information about your music and your inspirations. I’ve been listening to you while you were a part of Cradle of Filth and think you have the most amazing voice.
Please let me know what you think? If you are too busy to respond, then I completely understand. My website is for the fans, basically, so I’m sure they’d love to hear from someone with such amazing talent.
She responded that she’d be delighted to do just that. I asked if we could do a conversational interview, with us going back and forth with questions and answers so that it would flow easier, to which she responded that she’d do it however I wanted.
Apparently, the questions that I sent were lost in the gaping hole that is myspace, because when I emailed her to see if she had changed her mind, she replied that nothing was received.
Hmmm… So, I pondered. I again complemented her voice and talent and asked my question again. Still nothing. Myspace sucks sometimes.
With all of the email exchanges, you would think that I would’ve gotten one question answered. No, this is not the case. She was a great sport about the whole thing, still saying that she never received anything from me.
In short, if you wish to interview someone, have the questions prepared to send with the initial request. The artist can then decide if they wish to respond, and do so, in one short email.
Interview: The Southside Slashers
by roberta on Jul.05, 2007, under Uncategorized

In this interview, I had the chance to have a talk with Murda 1 of The Southside Slashers. Here, he gives us a peek into the men behind the Horrorcore music, made famous by the Insane Clown Posse.
Q: I’ve heard the song “Since I met you” and it kind of reminds me of something by Eminem. The rhymes are similar. Do you ever hear that? Who are you compared to the most?
A: No, I’ve never heard anyone compare us to Eminem. Although I would find it kind of funny if they did. Our rhymes are a lot different than his. Most people tell us that we have an original sound.
Q: “Underage Coochie” might be attacked by parents everywhere, what are your thoughts on that? Is it condoning pedophilia?
A: Actually I would like it to be attacked by parents everywhere. Usually when a group of people stand up to stop something, they only end up making it bigger. As for the second question…. No I wouldn’t personally condone acts of pedophilia. But, depending on the situation, 17 isn’t so bad….
Q: How would you describe your music to people who’ve never heard any horrorcore music before?
A: I couldn’t explain it to someone. Horrorcore is something to be heard, only than could you understand it. Some people will like it, others will hate it with a passion. Everyone has there own tastes.
Q: Is there an artist that you haven’t worked with yet, that you would like to do a collaboration with?
A: I could name alot. I personally would like to do tracks (And shows) with Tech N9ne, Prozak, Joe Bruce and Shaggs, Twiztid, Blaze and ect.
Q: What influences the lyrics on the new tracks?
A: Mostly what I’m feeling at the time. Everything is an influence, from the horror movies that I watch to the current artist that I’m listening to and everyday struggles.
Q: What is the track that you’re most proud of?
A: Hmmm, that’s a tough one. Probably Haterz and I say that because it has had a lot of good reviews.
Q: What track do you think is your “breakout” song? Haterz?
A: At this point, I would probably have to agree. But theres much more flavor to come. We will have some all new songs up soon that will blow that out of the water!
Q. What do you say to haters?
A: They can hate all they want. In the end all there doing is spreading our name to more people. Hate or not, it’s still getting our name known more. Music needs haters, enough said.
Q: Do you garner a lot of attention from fans of ICP and Twiztid?
A: Yes, I would say that most of our fans also listen to ICP, Twiztid and etc. We’re a Horrorcore group but not to be confused with them or others. We have our own style. Just like people who listen to KoRn might also like Nine Inch Nails because they are both in the Metal genre. But they both have their own style.
Q: Any words of wisdom to the fans?
A: Anything is possible!!!

Exclusive Charlie Drown interview!
by roberta on May.16, 2007, under Uncategorized
Recently, I had the opportunity to interview Charlie Drown. Woot!

Here is our conversation:
Q: What is the most influential music that inspires you to write?
A: Listening to nothing is actually what inspires me more.
Q: Your music has a chick-like Marilyn Manson feel to it, would you ever consider doing a collaboration with Manson, if the opportunity presented itself?
A: I had the opportunity once, things changed and did not happen, but he would be on my top list of people I would want to do stuff with. And when I say do stuff… I mean sexy stuff.
Q: How do you come up with the lyrics to your music? Who writes it?
A: I write most of my music myself unless I am doing a collaboration with a musician or a cover song. My lyrics or the “story” usually presents itself to me first and the music and lyrics come from a theatrical scene in my head.
Q: What is your favorite song?
A: It changes daily. I can honestly say I don’t have a favorite.
Q: Who inspires you the most? The least?
A: There is no single answer for either of those questions. I need to inspire myself first and foremost.
Q: Have you had any vocal training? You have a very powerful voice.
A: Yes, classical training at one point.
Q: I noticed that you opened up for KMFDM, what was that like?
A: It was like playing on a postage stamp sized stage around all their gear!!! I love those guys and any opportunity to hang out, play or just eat sushi and drink with them is a pleasure!
Q: If I were to see you live, what could I expect?
A: I fill the place with energy and drama, I will give you your monies worth.
Q: Would you consider your music metal? Or a sort-of speed/dance/rock with a tinge of metal?
A: I do not know what to call it. Dance Metal… haha
Q: Is it hard being a female vocalist in such a hard-hitting band? Or is it a blessing? Or both?
A: It is never hard to be female if you do it with respect and have the ability to learn as much as you can so that you can go head to head with the boys of the genre. Relying on being a girl and staying uneducated in a technical sense is sucky. Learn girls! We need to do more than sing and shake our fucking asses!
Q: Any words of wisdom to your fans?
A: Kill your parents, take lots of drugs and quit school at 13!!! haha
A special big thanks to Charlie Drown for taking the time to answer my questions. You can visit their website or myspace page for more info.

Trent Reznor interview from Revolver Mag
by roberta on May.01, 2007, under articles

Here is Trent Reznor’s interview from Revolver Magazine….Enjoy!
Fresh off the release of his band’s latest album Year Zero, Trent Reznor, lead singer of Nine Inch Nails, discusses the celebrity culture in Los Angeles, the idea of making pop records and his life after addiction in the June issue of Revolver (on stands now).
On the L.A. celebrity scene: “I didn’t go to L.A. for the culture, I moved there to be around my peers. You don’t see me out, or see pictures of me shopping. I’m repulsed by it, to be quite frank.â€
On the option of making pop records: “When the day comes that I have to hire the flavor of the day to write my records, stick a fork in me.â€
On life after addiction: “When you’re an addict, you feel like your problems are the biggest problems in the world. I’m not saying I can change the world, but now I feel like it’s my duty as a human to try and do something.â€
Nine Inch Nails happens to be one of my faves, so I enjoyed this piece, too.
Hat tip to Adam!
