If you’re a fan of Megadeth, Slayer, and all things metal, then haul your butt on over to Scott Wharton’s new metal blog, Hook In Mouth. The name of the blog just happens to be one of my favorite Megadeth songs, so you know I have to creep over there to keep up to date on my metal news.

I’m already digging the posts, including the ones about Megadeth nearing the completion of their newest album, how you can win some pretty cool Cannibal Corpse stuff, and how Rob Halford is launching his own record label.

Songs in my head

by on Dec.11, 2007, under Uncategorized

These two songs are stuck in my head. Do you have those moments where you can’t listen to anything else?

What songs get stuck in your head?

Notorious B.I.G. – “Juicy”

Babyshambles – “Delivery”

Two totally different genres of music, but I just can’t help myself.

10 Rockin’ albums for the island dweller in me…and you

by on Oct.29, 2007, under articles

It took me a rather long time to compile this list. Primarily because I had to think about ten albums that I could listen to, over and over again, and love every song. We here at Earuscker, pride ourselves on being stranded with the best music around.

1. Megadeth – So far…So good…So What!
Yes, Dave Mustaine, there is no one like him. It was a toss up between this or Holy Wars.

2. Metallica – Master of Puppets
Before Metallica sold out and started sucking.

3. Def Leppard – Pyromania
Once a fan, always a fan. I still remember Joe Elliott in those union jack t-shirts.

4. Guns N Roses – Appetite For Destruction
All of the songs on this one absolutely rock.

5. Matchbox Twenty – Mad Season
This is for when ya feel groovy. Rob Thomas has the voice of an angel and he’s hot. Can’t ask for more than that.

6. Slayer – Reign In Blood
Everyone gets mad once in a while, put this on, it will cure what ails you. (or make you madder..hehe)

7. Cradle of Filth – Nymphetamine
Nymphetamine has to be the best video ever. And I do mean ever. If you haven’t seen it. Go now, I’ll wait.

8. Eminem – The Slim Shady LP
Everyone needs a little bit of Shady in their lives. Listen to Mushrooms, it’s awesome.

9. Journey – Greatest Hits
You can’t tell me that Steve Perry doesn’t have an awesome voice. I wouldn’t believe it. Not for a minute.

10. Bruce Dickinson – Tattooed Millionaire
Love me some Bruce, his unique voice is the power behind Iron Maiden. Love it, love it.

What would you take with you?

The Top Ten Bands You Should Discover Today

by on Oct.12, 2007, under articles

1. Shiny Toy Guns

Shiny Toy Guns’ is comprised of Jeremy Dawson, Chad Petree, Carah Faye, and Mikey Martin. They say that their music is the sum of three parts, guitars, technology, and melody. It’s the perfect mix of synth meets high-powered vocals. Listen to “You are the one” and you’ll see what I mean.
Shiny Toy Guns’ MySpace
Genre: Electronica/Rock
Standout “Listen-to” Track: You Are The One

2. Dimmu Borgir

The best thing that has ever come out of Norway. I give you, Dimmu Borgir. These guys need no introduction. If you haven’t heard anything from them yet, then there’s no better time than the present.
Dimmu Borgir’s MySpace
Genre: Metal
Standout “Listen-to” Track: The Sacrilegious Scorn

3. The 69 Eyes

With the deep vocals of this band, you can’t pass up tracks like “Gothic Girl” or “Angels”. This is the best gothic rock mix that you’ll find. They are currently touring and getting coverage on MTV. Don’t let that lead you astray, though. This band has the staying power and will keep on rockin’ as long as fans like us are around.
The 69 Eyes’ MySpace
Genre: Gothic Rock
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Gothic Girl

4. Eighteen Visions

This is hard rock music at it’s best. This particular band has that special get up and go that a lot of hard rock bands could only strive for. Listen to this fast-paced musical genius and you’ll find yourself hooked.
Eighteen Visions’ MySpace
Genre: Hard Rock
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Victim

5. Charlie Drown

I don’t think I could say enough good things about this female fronted metal band. Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing the one and only Charlie. She was a delight, indeed. This rock and metal mix has the right combination of good grooves, metal, and attitude. Perfect for driving.
Charlie Drown’s MySpace
Genre: Hard Rock/Metal
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Painkiller Lullaby

6. Man Raze

Born from Def Leppard, The Sex Pistols, and Girl, are Man Raze. “Turn it up” is a song that I can clean house to or just go driving to. Phil Collen of Def Leppard gives the guitars a real working over. Simon Laffy and Paul Cook round off the sound for the music that is essential for your collection. Plus, Girl was awesome in it’s own right. As was The Sex Pistols. Nevermind the bollocks….ehh, you get the idea.
Man Raze’s MySpace
Genre: Rock and Roll
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Turn it up

7. Midnight Syndicate

It’s that time of the year again, folks. You guessed it, it’s that scary Halloween time….and what music is better to put the haunted in the house? Midnight Syndicate will fill that void for you. They make scary piano sounds and music that’s fit for your funeral.
Midnight Syndicate’s MySpace
Genre: Halloween Music
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Family Secrets

8. Black Tide

Black Tide are still rather new, but I couldn’t get over how much they resembled early Motley Crue. Not in the way they look, but in the electricity that they portray in their music. Don’t believe me? Check ‘em out for yourself.
Black Tide’s MySpace
Genre: Rock
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Shockwave

9. Common
This is the perfect mellow hip hop/rap mix of sweet light beats and cool vocals. It’s not gangster rap, and it totally reminds me of Lenny Kravitz.
Common’s MySpace
Genre: Hip Hop/Rap
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Drivin’ Me Wild

10. Emilie Autumn

I love the gothic sound and the toy pianos of Emilie Autumn. This is music that has a whole lot of heart and you can just tell by listening to it that a lot of talent has gone into the production and sound. Again, here’s another artist that I can’t say enough good things about. Check out her screaming in “Opheliac”, it rocks!
Emilie Autumn’s MySpace
Genre: Electronic Violin/Gothic/I don’t know :)
Standout “Listen-to” Track: Opheliac

Musical Tidbits Part Three

by on May.18, 2007, under articles

And before I forget, you just have to check out VoodooJive. Billychic has resurrected her song of the day and this one is Curtis Mayfield. I had never heard the song she’s spotlighting today, “Pusherman”, but I’m listening to it now.

It’s a bluesy track and it reminds me of the 70′s in a sort of cool type of way. Check it out.

I also just checked out her mother’s day post, her mom is a total movie star. That rocks! Happy belated Mother’s Day to Ann Wedgeworth from everyone here at Earsucker.

The blues is just one genre of music that I plan to cover in the future. For now, we’ll leave it to Billychic. Rock on!

PS. If you wish to purchase the album by Curtis Mayfield, please use her link.

Musical Tidbits Part Two

by on May.18, 2007, under articles

If you are ever in the mood for a darker sort of music, head on over to DarkDose. Their site is a delightful mix of melancholy and musical darkness. I visit there quite frequently and was really glad that I stumbled across this page recently.

I thought it would be a nice change for visitors of my site to have a dose of the dark musical reviews and commentary that flourishes over there.

They are currently showcasing a band by the name of Ion. This is a band that I’d previously never heard of, but clicked on the “Anathema Amaranatha” link at the bottom for a sample of the music. This is not an actual download, but you can listen to the track via QuickTime.

Upon listening to this song, I was greeted by a slow bit of piano playing and a melodic sort of dark sound. Slowly meandering her way in, the vocalist, Emily Saaen, treated us to words echoed beautifully in Russian. Slow pauses are played out nicely and the way that Emily injects herself into the music is a nice welcome.

This is slow and very well put together. You can purchase the CD via this link.

Oh how I love to find new music.

Musical Tidbits Part One

by on May.18, 2007, under articles

Adam over at AxPlay has a good post about easy songs to learn to play on the guitar.

I remember learning to play and the first song I learned was “Iron man” by Black Sabbath. After that was “Smoke on the water” by Deep Purple and then, the easiest song I’ve ever learned was “Come as you are” by Nirvana. Check out his post on that for more easier to play songs.

One of the more fun bands I tried to imitate was early Metallica. Learning “Fade to black” and “One” was pretty cool. I felt like a rock star…which is strange because if you saw me, you’d say I resemble a mild-mannered mother of two (but nowhere near a soccer mom). Maybe I was just a rock star in my own mind, or just in the car, as I sing along to my Journey or Survivor songs. I couldn’t carry a tune if I had a bucket, but when you’re in your car, it’s your stage, right?

One band I would’ve loved to shred would’ve been Megadeth, but Dave Mustaine is just too talented for me to mock. I’ll settle for jamming that in my car as loud as I possibly can.
