Shakira Speaks At Summit Of The Americas

Colombian singer Shakira returned to her native land on Friday to discuss the state of education in Latin America. President Barack Obama along with Secretary of State Hilary Clinton were in Cartagena to participate in the yearly Summit of the Americas. The summit brings together political leads to find solutions to issues being faced by people in the Western Hemisphere.

Shakira appeared in Colombia to deliver a speech pleading for improved childhood development policies. She said, “I am convinced that by far the best way to fight poverty in Latin America is to invest in the education of all our youths and children, and to do particularly from the months before they are born. And I firmly believe that this social investment must come not just from government, but from all of us including those in the business community. Inequality in Latin America as you know, is among the worst in the world, and such high levels of inequity are an indictment of the failure of past generations of Latin American political and business leads to deliver inclusive economic growth.”

She went on to say, “But I am not here to cry over spilled milk or to reflect upon the past, but rather to talk about the steps that we can take facing the future to ensure that our generation and nations do not fail again but instead fulfill the enormous potential reflected in their hundreds of millions of young people.”

Kudos to her for bringing this important cause to light.

Shakira plans to build a school for Haiti children

by on Jan.22, 2010, under articles

Thank God for celebrities who care, like Shakira and countless others.

The Colombian singer is planning to build a school for the children in Haiti whose lives have been turned upside-down by the earthquake that ravaged the nation last week.

She is set to perform on tonight’s Hope For Haiti Now telethlon, but she also wants to continue helping those affected.

Per ContactMusic:

Through her Barefoot Foundation, the star has teamed up with the Architecture for Humanity charity to build a school after the relief effort has helped get Haitians back on their feet. And Shakira hopes the school will mirror the success of the education facility she launched in her native Columbia, which provides teaching, nutrition and counseling for kids in need.

She says, “There is a great need for immediate aid in Haiti, but also for longer-term reconstruction. For that reason, we are doing our small part to help Haiti rebuild and give the children affected by this disaster the chance to learn and thrive. I hope we can use some of what we’ve learned working in Colombia to help Haiti’s children recover. When we educate children we empower societies, and right now Haiti needs all of our help.”

2009 American Music Awards winners

by on Nov.22, 2009, under articles

2009-amas-winnersThe 2009 American Music Awards are underway and we’ve already had some pretty awesome performances. Held at the Nokia Theater, the awards show commenced with an eight-minute performance by Janet Jackson.

So far the greatest performance of the evening goes to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ song, “Empire State Of Mind”. Also performing tonight were Daughtry, Shakira, Kelly Clarkson, Keith Urban, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige, Carrie Underwood, the Black Eyed Peas, and more.

My favorite performance of the entire night was Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and “Speechless”. To separate the songs, she broke the glass wall that encased her piano. It was so over the top and great, definitely the best performance of the night.

And the winners: (continue reading…)
