Betty White is so f**king metal
by Stephen VanDyke on May.10, 2010, under articles
True story: I once saw Betty White when I worked at ***** hotel in Santa Monica back in 1995 or 1996. I was delivering a fax or some delivery to her room and she seemed really cool and it was awesome to meet a real life celebrity. Well, I was about to go, and out of nowhere she throws a bunch of quarters at me (for the tip). They bounced off me and rolled all over the hallway. I looked at her stunned, and she just smiles at me, little old Betty White, like nothing at all is weird about throwing quarters at the delivery boy. I ask her if everything is okay and she slams the door in my face. I picked up the quarters, but I felt really dirty for the rest of the day.
I’m just glad that she finally snapped on TV so everyone can see just how crazy she really is. (continue reading…)
Mashup video: The Beatles vs LCD Soundsystem vs The Kinks
by AttentionDeficitKid on Apr.14, 2010, under articles
So this dude called FAROFF made a really catchy mashup of some music your parents probably listened to, but then made it bopper friendly and fun to dance to by adding LCD Soundsystem so that teh ittelerate kids of touyube will be pleased. I personally really liked it, so I can assume our own illiterate readership will appreciate me posting this. On top of all that, the video syncs up nicely and will not make you look like a homo if you show it to your internet friends. (continue reading…)

Foxy Shazam: Oh Lord video
by Stephen VanDyke on Mar.17, 2010, under articles
I just love this video by Foxy Shazam!, and think they sound a lot like the ballads of Queen mashed with the more mellow Aerosmith guitar journeys with maybe a little of that Anthony Keidis funk for good measure. Take a listen for yourself after the jump. (continue reading…)
Kid Cudi: Pursuit of Happiness (both video versions)
by Stephen VanDyke on Mar.09, 2010, under articles
I honestly thought I posted this here before, but I guess this will be the first time, my bad. I saw Kid Cudi’s “party video” version for his new song Pursuit of Happiness about a week ago and it struck me as a very cerebral subject that breaks away from the hip-hop pack in a very refreshing way. And now I learned that he made an alternate video version of the same song and to be honest, this one is so much better. I’ve embedded both here with my thoughts, enjoy! (continue reading…)

OK Go video is gorgeous homage to Rube Goldberg
by Stephen VanDyke on Mar.03, 2010, under articles
In case you didn’t know who Rube Goldberg is, he created all these cartoon contraptions that were overly complicated. Gorillaz post new Stylo video to YouTube
by Stephen VanDyke on Mar.02, 2010, under articles
Action-packed, running from Johnny fat-law and his donut-addiction (who promptly gets run off the road, BOOSH!) and then … what’s this … Bruce fucking Willis makes a cameo as the villain. The video blows me away with it’s sophistication and their new album is great through and through. NPR has the entire album available to stream for free, which is really cool. (continue reading…)
I hope Arctic Monkeys doesn’t sue anybody over this
by Stephen VanDyke on Mar.02, 2010, under articles
Let me repeat that title: I really, really hope Arctic Monkeys doesn’t sue anybody over this. I say this twice because EarSucker has been the target of the Arctic Monkey lawyers in the past for linking to their music (some Web Sheriff/Sherrif/Sharif nonsense that isn’t worth exploring here), and I know for a fact that mashups are in that very gray zone of copyright law that gets IP lawyers horny.
The fucked up thing is that this mashup is really good and I just wasted a good twenty seconds of your time NOT talking about the music of “The Arctic Monkeys Brush the Dirt Off of Clint Eastwood’s Shoulders” or the other folks on this mashup song thingy. Which just makes me hate lawyers even more and endorse marching them into the ovens (okay that one is probably too far). Anyways, watch this awesome mashup some crazy wacky awesome YouTube guy made without consent from Jay Z, Arctic Monkeys, and Gorrilaz [sic]. If you would like to download the song, the creator says you are allowed (see the box message on the YouTube page). We promote this! Which means this video will definitely get yanked and more lawyers involved. Look at us now bitches, we are so edgy it cuts through diamonds. (continue reading…)
Video: Kirsten Dunst in ‘Akihabara Princess’
by Stephen VanDyke on Mar.01, 2010, under articles
I couldn’t believe it when I saw Kirsten Dunst sing “I’m Turning Japanese” in this video dressed in some kind of crazy hawt anime cosplay outfit, and with blue hair. One thing is for sure: she is extremely fit and I don’t blame anyone who goes full retard (unf unf unf) in the comments after watching this starlet sex-kitten’s out-of-character video about Turning Japanese. Robot drumming machine with a Wiimote
by Stephen VanDyke on Feb.22, 2010, under articles
Popsci has a really cool article about Jazari, a drum machine robot thing that Patrick Flanagan built so he could play some drums and other percussion instruments with his Wii remotes:
A musician has harnessed the power of two Nintendo Wiimotes to become a cyborg percussionist with the robo-band Jazari. His playing of one drum machine can evoke an automated response from another, so that he can go around the drum circle in a beautiful display of human-robot improvisation.
The man behind the machine, Patrick Flanagan, is a composer who cites music theory, music cognition, and machine learning as the three “chin-stroking disciplines” that influence his work. He created Jazari with a nod to Al-Jazari, a polymath of the Arab world in the 13th century who supposedly created the world’s first robot band.
I think he built something really cool, but dances like a white guy. Watch a video of the bot in action after the jump. (continue reading…)
