Curtis Finch, Jr. is up first singing Fantasia’s song “I Believe”. Keith Urban said he always picks the right songs because he knows who he is. He was singing above what he should’ve been. Randy Jackson said he loves the re-styling and he loves the jacket. He wants him to try something different, but he feels like he’s not seeing anything new. Mariah Carey said she was getting the choir feeling from him and she wants to hear more of the gospel-tinged songs.
Janelle Arthur is up next, singing “Gone” by Montgomery Gentry. Keith said she was burning it up up there and he loved that she put some classic runs in there. Nicki said she liked last week’s song better and she had more confidence. She wants to hear songs that show off her pretty voice and she wasn’t sure about the song choice. Tonight was a great performance and she looks great.
Devin Velez is up next singing “Temporary Home” by Carrie Underwood. Keith said it wasn’t one of his better performances and it was the wrong song choice. He didn’t feel like he had confidence in the song. Nicki said she disagrees with Keith and this is his comfort zone. He sounds great and he is multi-faceted. Randy said it was way too safe and he underplayed himself. He said it’s still a competition and they have to go for broke with this. Mariah said they expect so much of him because he’s that good. For the competition, there are a lot of great voices and keep doing what he’s doing.
Angie Miller is up next, performing “I Surrender” by Celine Dion. Keith said he surrenders. He said he loves that she is such an artist and that she can take a song from any era and make it sound so “right now”. She knocked it out of the park. Nicki said she looks like a million dollars and they styled her so well. She is perfection on every level and her voice is flawless. Randy said the competition starts now! “This girl is in it to win it!” Mariah said it was stellar.
Paul Jolley is up next performing his rendition of “Amazed” by Lonestar. Keith said he listened to Jimmy and his advice is taking hold. It was one of his best performances and he doesn’t need “all of that other stuff”. Nicki said it was the first time he has stimulated her sexual appetite. She really felt he did the song justice. Randy said it was a great song choice for him and he’s taking it all in. Mariah said she loved that Jimmy told him a few things that rang true. She doesn’t want this to make him hold back and take away the real singer in him.
Candice Glover is up next, singing “I Who Have Nothing” by Ben E. King. Standing ovation from the judges. Keith said if they had more time, they’d still be standing and clapping. She hits notes so effortlessly and beautifully. Nicki said it would be in everybody’s interest to never, ever perform that song again on Idol because she just destroyed and annihilated it. Randy said she really worked that song out and it was one of the best performances of this season. Mariah said every time she’s on stage, she is mesmerizing and a singer of her caliber can do anything. She said she didn’t stand because her skirt is too tight. Ha!
Lazaro Arbos is up next, singing “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson. Keith said he could feel it when he’s singing, but that song wasn’t in his wheelhouse. Nicki said she likes that he looks like Ricky Ricardo tonight, but this wasn’t her favorite song from him. Today, he seemed very nervous, so don’t let anyone knock him off of his square. Randy said, for him the pitch was all over the place and the song was too big for him. This wasn’t the right choice. Mariah said people are falling in love with the courage he has and he’s showing them so much vulnerability.
Kree Harrison is taking the stage next to perform Roy Orbison’s song, “Crying”. Keith said she could sing the phone book, he just loves her so much. If she made a record tomorrow, he would buy it. She has real, genuine life experience and it comes through her voice every time she opens up and sings. Nicki said it was smooth, delicious and fun. Randy said he loves her and her voice and it makes him feel good all over. She has an infectious voice that makes him feel good all over. Mariah said she has an enormous range and she was happy to see that song choice. She can’t help but emote and be real when she sings. She can’t wait to hear her sing again.
Burnell Taylor is taking on Ruben Studdard’s popularized song “Flying Without Wings”. Keith said his voice is unique and he is magnetic. Nicki said she loves the song and she’s glad he picked a Ruben song. She loves him and he’s well on his way. He put his own twist on the song. Randy said it was very nice and it was a great song. He puts his own twist on it. Now, he’s in the zone. Mariah said it makes her very emotional to hear him sing and he sings so melodically. He is very unique and can take his gift even further and go all the way with it.
Singing last tonight is Amber “Little Whitney” Holcomb, performing Kelly Clarkson’s song, “A Moment Like This”. Keith said it was beautiful and he loved that song for her. The way she performs is the way he feels watching it, it was effortless. Nicki said that was the best performance of the night. Her voice and her aura remind her of Whitney on her first album. Randy said this was the best finale song, ever and she blew it out of the box tonight. She has arrived and she belongs here. Mariah said #POW. She doesn’t care what she wears, she just has a natural gift and to critique it is unnecessary.
