Tonight on “Duets” the mentors and their proteges took on songs that inspire them. On the show’s third week, all of the contestants went into the competition knowing that one of them would be sent home tonight. After trying to prove themselves for two weeks, someone is sent home. Who was eliminated?
Robin Thicke and Alexis Foster kicked off the competition tonight with Roberta Flack’s song, “Killing Me Softly”. She hit the top of the leaderboard, after Kelly Clarkson said that she wasn’t feeling the chemistry between Alexis and Robin. WATCH:
Up next, Jennifer Nettles and John Glosson, performed “How Great Thou Art”, which John dedicated to his mother. Kelly said she was secretly trying to figure out how to get him kicked off the show. She commented that Jennifer and John sounded like they’d been singing together forever. Robin said he was thinking about John’s family and the song gave him feeling. After the scoring, he has bumped Alexis to second place to take the top spot on the leaderboard. WATCH:
On the stage next, Kelly Clarkson and her duet partner Jordan Meredith sang, “Mama’s Broken Heart” by Miranda Lambert. John said he loved it and the energy that she projected. Robin said she looked “tasty as pie.” Jennifer loved it and Jordan’s attitude. On the chart, she bumped Alexis into third place and has taken the second place spot. WATCH:
John Legend took the stage next to perform with Meleana Brown. Together, they performed “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys. Kelly said that the song was very well done and they have that chemistry. Jennifer said Meleana really opened up and went into those big notes. Robin said Meleana is wonderful and meant to sing that song. She placed third on the chart, knocking Alexis down to the fourth position. WATCH:
Robin Thicke and Olivia Chisholm performed Beyonce’s song “Crazy In Love”. Jennifer said that she could tell Olivia had fun on the stage and she was wonderful. Kelly said she loved the performance and she couldn’t wait to hear her album. John said he loved the way she opened up and she felt like a whole other person from last week. On the charts, she took fourth place, pushing Alexis down even further. WATCH:
Jennifer Nettles performed “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” by Michael Bolton with J. Rome. J. dedicated the song to his grandfather, whom he last saw singing “Amazing Grace”. John said J. Rome is a phenomenal vocalist and it was a tear-jerker. Robin said nothing, but just clapped. Kelly said she couldn’t keep it together and she cried during the performance. On the charts, he bumped everyone down a notch and claimed the top spot. WATCH:
Kelly Clarkson and Jason Farol performed Leonard Cohen’s song “Hallelujah” as that is one of his father’s favorite songs. Robin said he thought the song was lovely, and he understood Jason’s need to go against his family. John said it was a little pitchy sometimes, but he needed to pronounce his words a bit more. Jennifer added that she loved the connection to the song and it sounded great. On the charts, Jason is in sixth place. WATCH:
John Legend and his final duet partner Bridget Carrington took to the stage to perform “Heard It Through The Grapevine” by Gladys Knight. She dedicated her performance for the evening to her father. Robin said he felt she did a great job. Jennifer said she has so much attitude and the low part at the beginning felt muddy. Kelly commented that she is good and comfortable and it shows that she had fun on the stage. Bridget landed in fourth place on the charts. WATCH:

After both a capella performances, Kelly said she loves Alexis, but Jason is her boy. She didn’t feel that Jason belonged in the bottom two. Robin felt that they were both equally as lovely, but neither should give up on their career or dreams. John said that they have proven that they have something special and he can tell that they both love doing this. Jennifer said this industry is a war of attrition and asked where the performances earlier in the show.
