Hollywood couple Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones decided to split up after she ended her treatment for bipolar disorder in May, according to reports.
The Wall Street actor and his actress wife announced on Wednesday that they are “taking some time apart” to work on their marriage. The news followed weeks of speculation about the state of their relationship, and a report in The Sun suggests the couple have been apart since the end of May.
It is believed their marriage broke down because of the stress of dealing with Zeta-Jones’ illness and Douglas’ cancer battle in 2010. Last month, Zeta-Jones revealed she has a private room at the couple’s home where she spends hours sitting alone to be away from her husband.
She said, “We recently had an extension built, to house a closet. It’s like the Tardis – I go in there and never come out. My husband knocks on the door and says, ‘Can I come in?’. But I’ve got a TV in there, and my daughter brings her friends in… I could be in there for the whole day, happily.”
